I promise, One size DOES not fit all. There are some common factors that will attract millennials to your team or organisation in the workplace. One main thing is to not constantly remind a millennial that they are a millennial. They know!
It’s easy to assume a Millennial employee is lazy, disinterested and entitled. Why?
–Because they question the value of some tasks (it may seem like they just don’t want to do the work). It’s common to have some tasks that a duplicate of others, but vary simply because of how they are presented or submitted. A millennial will pick this and will want to challenge why the two/three tasks should be done. Lazy? Nope. Just prefers to work smart.
-They want to know why they have been overlooked for a promotion or why they haven’t been taken for training. Entitled? Nope. Just wants answers. Millennials aren’t afraid to ask questions if they feel something isn’t being done right, especially if it affects them
Here are a few tips for you, if you work with millennials;
- Don’t oversell your company/organisation (is it really an environment suitable for a millennial to be themselves or should they fit in with the existing culture;
- Be upfront about their future in your company – how does one progress; what is taken into consideration for one to get promoted?
- They grew up with a lot of electronic devices- use that to your advantage;
- Embrace Flexibility -allow remote working at least once a week;
- Challenge them – their skills and knowledge. Give them work that makes learning a constant part of their work. Monotony leads to a demotivated millennial
Millennials aren’t all bad. They are hungry for success, for the Executive positions. But are often discouraged by what Companies look at when maybe considering a promotion or even a salary increment. If the policy dictates how rewards are made, many organisations go back on their word and give reasons such as – “He/She is too young, they just joined the company 3 years ago- let’s give it to X he/she has worked here for 6 years. Yet the millennial may be more qualified and competent for the role.
If the years one has worked for an organisation play a BIG role, let them know well in advance so they don’t expect only their excellent performance to accelerate their career growth.
