It’s common to hear organizations say they have a policy where they can sponsor you to study. These are there BUT! You will not be sponsored for just anything.
You know your career plans and you understand why a training or course would benefit you in the next 3 or 5 years. An employer values your growth but also will not train you beyond what is required for your role or any anticipated next role.
It’s common to hear the Learning & Development team say;
- It’s not budgeted for
- It’s not a core training or mandatory training for your role
- It’s too expensive , find an alternative locally (this one doesn’t really work cause in BW sometimes it’s hard to find credible alternatives).
So… my fellow corporate millennials you alone are truly responsible for your self development. It helps you (it helps you become more of an asset to your current employer or future employer)
Trainings and courses are EXPENSIVE 😅 start small.
- Attend free seminars/webinars/conferences;
- READ – do you know that you can follow SMART sites on Instagram and on Pinterest. Let your social media time benefit you;
- Take free courses online (they exist)
- Save for one short course and thereafter a big one- the Masters programs; PHDs.. Any focused pursuit of knowledge will help you stand out.
- Ask questions. Have a notepad and record any areas you need to research on daily.
Also. Don’t just be one thing. Look for more learning opportunities outside your normal line of work/qualification.
I personally value my own self development and have learnt not to expect anyone to have control over it. I will always find out what is available for me in an Organisation however the responsibility is not delegates to the Employer.
