Carry a little book with you to work everyday. Use it to write down things you do not know; or do not fully understand; or things that intrigued you.
At the end of each day, take time out to research on the items you have jotted down.
This is very useful when you start a new role or when you have just joined a new Company. It also helps you internalise the fact that you still have some things to learn. It is so easy to feel like you do not know anything at all, and that you are going to fail at what you do. By keeping a little book you pace your learning. You track your progress. You watch yourself grow daily.
The importance of a little book:
- Helps you concentrate in meetings and as you are working on new tasks;
- Depicts that you are a “teachable” person – this is an important trait in the workplace;
- You can track what you have learnt over time- this will help you acknowledge the progress you are making; as well as help you regularly update your resume/CV details;
- You become more intentional about your day – as you use the little book to guide your learning, it motivates you to seek more learning opportunities throughout the day;
- It becomes your reference book throughout your day-to-day
When we acknowledge that we do not know everything, we allow ourselves to learn. We create room for learning, and this makes it a little easier when you take time out to learn. (I said learn so many times)
I carry a little book daily, and I try to learn at least one new thing each day. Some days I need to quickly read up on a few topics in order to correctly complete a task and then later, out of interests sake, I read up extensively. Sometimes, you just have to ask a colleague to explain something to you and that covers your learning for the day.
You may not need the information immediately, but by keeping it written, when you need it, it will be easily accessible.
Never stop learning. Learn one new thing everyday.
